Your mission

Checkmk is a global leader in IT monitoring. While our product teams build the future of monitoring, our Internal IT ensures that the company behind the product operates smoothly, securely, and scalably.

We have established the role of Staff Infrastructure Engineer to create a clear distinction between strategic management and technical excellence: While our Director IT focuses on strategy, governance, and stakeholder management, you are the highest technical authority within the team. You translate visions into robust architectures, define standards, and provide technical leadership to our 8-person IT team through complex modernization initiatives.

This is a role within our Internal IT department, not in SaaS product development. You will architect and scale the internal infrastructure that empowers our 300+ employees and our mission-critical development environments.

Your Mission

  • Architecture & Technical Authority: You design the architecture of our hybrid infrastructure - centering on our own physical data centers (Proxmox) while strategically integrating Public Cloud services (AWS, GCP and Azure).
  • Technical Framework & Standards: You define the architectural standards and workflows for operating our Linux server landscape and the technical integration of numerous business applications and SaaS solutions. You create the stable framework that allows these services to be managed and utilized efficiently.
  • Internal Service Provider: You treat all departments as your customers - from Development and Product to HR, Finance and Ops. You develop workflows and self-service capabilities to ensure IT is a seamless enabler for their success.
  • Efficiency & Automation: You move beyond just "writing scripts." You analyze technical workflows and organizational methods to minimize repetitive, manual tasks across servers, workstations, and internal processes. Your goal is to ensure IT can support company growth without linear headcount increases.
  • Technical Leadership & Modernization: You act as a mentor and driver for tech modernization. You define shared blueprints, best practices, and technical standards, fostering a mindset of collaboration and continuous improvement within the team.
  • Security & Compliance: Working closely with our CISO, you integrate modern security concepts (network segmentation, firewalls, IAM) deep into the infrastructure and streamline the automated reporting required for ISO audits.

Your profile


We are looking for an engineer who understands the "foundational" layers of IT but masters the tools and methods of a modern, agile environment.

  • Experience: You have 5+ years (ideally significantly more) of experience designing and operating complex, high-availability infrastructure environments.
  • Hybrid Infrastructure: You are a Linux expert with deep knowledge of virtualization (Proxmox preferred, or KVM/VMWare) and physical server/storage hardware. You are proficient in Public Cloud environments, specifically AWS, GCP and Azure.
  • Application & Integration Context: You possess a deep understanding of the requirements of server landscapes and application stacks. You can translate complex dependencies into clear architectural guidelines and scalable management processes.
  • Network Engineering: You have a strong grasp of physical data center architectures, including VLAN segregation, firewall concepts, and secure network design.
  • Automation Mindset: You are experienced in Configuration Management and Infrastructure-as-Code, but more importantly, you have a "workflow-first" approach to solving scaling challenges.
  • Leadership Qualities: You enjoy making technical decisions, establishing standards, and elevating the skills of your colleagues through mentoring and architectural guidance.
  • Languages: Fluency in English is required; German is a significant advantage.
