Your mission

Our engineering organization is growing. We’re now 75 developers strong, led by a CTO and three Engineering Managers. 14 developers in several teams are focussed on Checkmk Cloud - our SaaS product - now they need a dedicated engineering leader.

To support our next growth phase, we’re hiring an Engineering Manager to own the SaaS side of engineering and extend our leadership team.

In this role, you’ll take full responsibility for the Checkmk Cloud engineering group: people, delivery, quality, and technical execution. You’ll work closely with the CTO, the other Engineering Managers, Product, team leads and staff engineers to scale our SaaS platform, strengthen engineering standards, and keep teams fast, focused, and sane.

We see engineering as one team. Practically, that means Checkmk Cloud and Checkmk Core are deeply integrated. You’ll collaborate closely with teams focussed on the core components of Checkmk to align roadmaps and feature development and manage technical interfaces.

You’re here to build a high-performing SaaS engineering organization: Shipping reliable cloud software, improving how we work, growing engineers, and making sure Checkmk Cloud scales technically and organizationally.

You’ll report to the CTO and work as a peer to the existing Engineering Managers, with a clear mission: Build a world-class SaaS platform while keeping Checkmk Cloud and Checkmk Core moving forward as one engineering organization.


Process

• Help to translate the product roadmap into a resource and time planning with support of tech leads and product management
• Build a great product for our users in close collaboration with the product team
• Build strong team leads, clear structures, and scalable processes without calcifying
• Work with tech leads to ensure we deliver quality software on time
• Support the continuous improvement of our engineering processes, tools and practices
• Ensure the smooth interworking of the different engineering functions, such as feature and platform development, QA, and security
• Actively hunt down the biggest problems in engineering and product delivery - and tackle them even when they fall between roles, teams, or org charts
• Identify and tackle key problems that need solving
• Bring real startup energy: See a problem, own it, fix it
• Ensure we have a good development productivity

Management

• Directly manage parts of the Engineering team
• Be the coach of the team members. Run 1:1s and feedback developers and lead your team leads
• Conduct annual career progression talks and salary reviews with individual developers
• Ensure a strong onboarding of new colleagues
• Support team culture and bonding via team events and other measures
• Run the annual headcount planning and hire new team members

Your profile

• Senior engineering leadership experience in a SaaS or cloud environment
• Profound engineering experience
• University degree in computer science, engineering or similar
• You have worked with several teams and/or several firms before
• 5+ years of hands-on development experience
• 4+ years of experience in technical leadership incl. hiring, 1:1s, giving feedback, building teams, delivering features on time in the right quality 
• Strong technical background (You don’t need to be the smartest coder in the room, but you must belong in the room)
• You see yourself accountable for the results of the engineering team
• You have positive energy and motivating spirit
• Clear communication, high standards in hybrid or remote work environment
• You thrive in international environments and are fluent in English. Fluency in German is a strong plus
